Mixology Monday With The Leveretts - Holiday Mule

As you'll soon find out, we love a garnish that is not only pretty... but also elevates the drink. All of our recipes will have two parts, the garnish and the drink! This week we will kick things off with a Cranberry Holiday Mule. You will want proper mule mugs for this drink. This just means that they are made out of copper, usually hammered. You may find mule mugs that are made of copper and have a lining on the inside OR are pressed from a sheet of copper (with or without non-copper lining). These are fine as they provide the same benefit of keeping your drink cool.
This recipe will make two drinks because we believe no one should drink alone. Let's get started!


Here's what you need:

For Garnish
1/2 Cup Fresh Cranberries (approx 30 cranberries)
1/8 Cup Granulated Sugar (plus a tablespoon or so to coat cranberries at the end)
1/4 Cup Water
1/4 Cup cranberry juice
2 Lime Wedges
Fresh Rosemary Sprigs

For Drink
4oz Vodka
1oz Lime Juice
3oz Cranberry Juice
4oz Ginger Beer (non alcoholic)
2 Copper Mule Mugs


Let's Start the Garnish:

  1. Add fresh cranberries, sugar, water and 1 rosemary sprig to sauce pan and heat to evaporate 1/4 - 1/2 of the water. (about 8-10 minutes)
  2. When half of the liquid has evaporated, take cranberries out and place in ice water to cool then in refrigerator to chill for at least 15 minutes.
  3. Keep remaining syrup. Skip to the Drink steps below while cranberries are chilling in the fridge.
  4. (After at least 15 minutes) Skewer 3 to 5 of the now chilled cranberries on a toothpick and coat with granulated sugar.

Let's Make the Drink:
In each mug you will want to: 

  1. Add ice.
  2. 2 ounces of vodka.
  3. 1/2 ounce of lime juice
  4. 2 ounces of non-alcoholic ginger beer
  5. 1/2 ounces of cranberry juice. If you choose to prepare the garnish above, you can add the cranberry syrup you set aside to make up the 1/2 oz (our preference)
  6. Turn lightly (as opposed to a vigorous stir or shake).

Almost Done!

  1. Take one lime wedge sliced through the middle about 3/4  to the rind and rub around lip of mule mug before placing in the mug.
  2. Add a fresh sprig of rosemary
  3. Revisit step 4 from the garnish preparation and add skewered cranberries on top of the drink.
  4. ENJOY! Add smiles, jokes, and good cheer.
